Rough Trade

ellywinkleSo, first for me. This July I participated in the Rough Trade Challenge. It was the Little Black Dress challenge to create two Sentinel fusion stories of 15,000-20,000 words each. This was a personal stretch for me because, first I’ve never written a fan fic over 6k. Second, I hate the thought of posting WIPs so the idea of it out there for people to read is a little disconcerting. Third, it’s a pretty public forum and let’s face it I haven’t posted anything that actual people would read in a long time. (I even have trouble posting thoughts here even though I know there is no interest in reading it.). I only created this site to make myself “share” random dribs and drabs of writing as a step to make myself post actual stories.
Outcomes: I’m extremely pleased with the result. I have completed two stories that are readable, enjoyable, and have a lot of potential in the editing phase so GO ME!
The down side: I REALLLLLY need to learn to pace myself. I felt like I was in a race to finish. I realize that part of it is that I tend to binge write when I set down to write. I can crank 10k in a day but then often won’t write again for a week. This is where I have a tendency to burn out before finishing long stories. It’s one of the reason I participated, to see my strengths and weaknesses. Also, I have trouble shutting my mind down. I ended up with a lot of insomnia. So more research.
Another thing was working on the art work. I had never done that, at all. So complete new experience for me. It was painful at first but by the end I could see where people might want to explore this. I downloaded a few programs so we’ll see where that ends up.
So, I guess what this all means is that I will be participating in more challenges. In the right environment is inspires me to grow and create. To the future!
