The Best Laid Plans

So, I know I said I was going to have my Rough Trade story, Trust Issues, posted on my site by the end of May. Well, it's ready to go, but I started having computer issues. Well, if you call a computer smoking up the house "issues."

But don't fear. All my work was backed up. And as of today, I have a new laptop. So just a few more days to get all my programs loaded.

It will be up soon. Along with my project files for July Rough Trade. I can't wait.

May 2020

Ok, I admit it. I’m a complete failure at regular updating. I always start things with the best of intentions, but then, well…life gets in the way. And there are so many better things I would rather be writing. So apologies for silence and procrastination.

Speaking of writing, I’ve been doing a bit of that. I’m working on editing for Trust Issues and should have that up in a couple of days. Trust Issues was my November 2019 Rough Trade story. I was really pleased with it and can’t wait to post the final. My April 2020 Rough Trade, The Prodigal Son, will be my next editing project. It requires some serious rewrites, so while I’m aiming for June, I won’t make promises.

This is the Year of the Sentinel on Rough Trade. I already have my story ideas for the rest of the year. Next up is July, and I will be entering the challenge with Unbreakable and Sanctuarium.  Unbreakable is a Magnificent 7 ATF / NCIS crossover. The primary pairings there will be Chris Larabee/Tony DiNozzo and Vin Tanner/Ezra Standish. Ezra comes online while undercover, and Tony is called in to help get through his unbreakable shields to train him. Along the way, he meets his resistant sentinel, Chris.

Sanctuarium is a Stargate Atlantis story. Latent guide Rodney McKay comes online while off-world. When they return, an injured McKay is given a dose of empathic suppressants before anyone can tell Dr. Keller he’s online. John goes feral from bond interference, and the expedition has to work to keep him from killing her while discovering a conspiracy to prevent latent guides from coming online. I’m really looking forward to July.

I’m also working on my plotting for November, which will be a Teen Wolf Sentinel Fusion that I’m tentatively calling A Hope in Hale. More information on that may be available later in the year. In between Rough Trade stories, there are ongoing projects for next year’s Quantum Bang, another episode of my Harry Potter Peaches series, and a couple other stories that are bouncing around.

So I’m keeping myself busy while avoiding face-to-face interactions in real life. Hope everyone out there is staying safe and entertained. And I promise to try, maybe, eventually to update this…well, on occasion.

Summer 2019

It’s been one hot summer, which is the perfect excuse for me hiding out in the air conditioning and writing. I’ve accomplished a lot. While I skipped the July Rough Trade, I was able to finish edits on my April submission. Ferris Wheels and Hot, Vicious Scientists is a sequel to my short story Getaway. I’m enjoying this Verse and have notes for at least two more stories…eventually. These two are posted on my site in the Ferris Wheels & You Universe.

In Harry Potter Land, my Quantum Bang was posted in May. Judgment and Justice was my first attempt at a novel-length fic, and I’m extremely pleased with how it turned out. It was also my first time participating in a Big Bang Challenge, so that was a new experience as well. It’s still posted on the Quantum Bang site and will remain there. I will, however, repost it on my own site as well before the end of the year. I’ve also posted Episode 2 in The Sweet Taste of Peaches series. It’s called Just Peachy. I’m playing with the series format here, and there are no timeframes for when episodes will be posted, but I have roughly ten planned at this time.

I’ve posted several shorts for the Fluff Bingo Challenge on the Just Write! Discord server. It’s fun to let the fluffy bunnies run free and just write whatever comes to mind sometimes. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them.

THE FUTURE

Most of my summer has been spent plotting. November’s Rough Trade challenge is The Divergent Path. I’ve plotted my entry and am excited about writing it. It’s an NCIS/Stargate Series crossover that I’m titling Trust Issues. It’s canon divergent for NCIS and AU for Stargate. I can’t wait for November!

I’ve signed up for the 2020 Quantum Bang. I’m still brainstorming ideas but have a few that sound interesting. I would love to discuss them all with you, but…it’s a secret.

Next year is the year of the Sentinel on Rough Trade. I have so many sentinel ideas. It’s gonna be fun!

May/June Updates and Quantum Bang Announcement

I can’t believe this is the last week of May. We are halfway through 2019, and it went fast. I’m happy with the way my April Rough Trade turned out. Ferris Wheels and Hot, Vicious Scientists is the sequel to my story Getaway. Editing will start this week, and it should go up sometime in June, July at the latest.

My 2018 NaNo/November Rough Trade, Transmutations, is still in the rewrite process. I’m hoping to clean that up in July…but no promises. One of my New Years resolutions was to improve my craft and learn. This one has been a huge learning experience and the longest thing I’ve written to date. So I hope to get it right, not fast.

Speaking of Rough Trade, I will be skipping July Rough Trade this year. I hope to spend a lot of time reading all the great work out there, but I have two rewrites and five plotting projects of my own I want to work on. Among those are my next NaNo, two of next year’s Rough Trades, and the 2020 Quantum Bang.

I loved working on this year’s Quantum Bang and am happy that I can talk about it, FINALLY! The Name is Judgment and Justice. It’s a Harry Potter fix-it set in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. It starts the day Ron and the twins rescue Harry in that flying car, but this is Arthur’s story. The story of a father that will protect his kids, children by birth and by choice. I hope you enjoy it.

I thank PhoenixRising for her time and efforts as my Alpha Reader. Kudos to Jilly, Keira, and everyone involved with Quantum Bang for their support, encouragement, and willingness to listen to venting and provide help when we were trying to talk about a secret story that we were not allowed to talk about…whew. And finally, a standing ovation to my artist, sexycazzy. Check out her amazing art!

Her art and my project summary are up now. The story is scheduled for posting sometime June 1. And don’t forget to support everyone who participated. The art up on the site is fantastic, and I’m certain the stories will blow your mind. QUANTUM BANG LINK.

April Fun

Been a while since I updated. Participated in April's Rough Trade. My rough draft, Ferris Wheels and Hot, Vicious Scientists is complete. Came in just under 38,000 words so feeling good about that. Posted a Harry Potter fic, The Sweet Taste of Peaches, on my site today. It's actually episode 1 of a series. Should have episode 2 sometime this summer, but no promises on when. Next I'm working on the edits for my Nano, Transmutations. I hope to have that ready for posting in May.

Have several projects on tap. Three Magnificent Seven stories, Harry Potter, Stargate, and a Teen Wolf/Sky High fusion that I'm having fun writing.  No promises on when these will be ready for posting, just a little peek into some of my projects.

Enjoy.

New Years Resolutions

Well, 2018 is now in the past, and 2019 is the present. I accomplished a lot last year. Not in individual stories, but in taking risks and putting myself out on the public stage. Let me tell you, that’s when you find out who your friends really are. The ones that will never read a word you write but are supportive of your craft and encourage you to keep working at it if you are enjoying yourself.

I completed my first two challenges, wrote rough drafts for two novel-length stories, and posted several shorts. I also took the plunge and created my first site to publish these stories. And that has been a considerable learning curve. I also made my first attempt at creating graphics/banners for the stories.

I’m thankful for all of the support in the community. I live in awe of the wealth of knowledge the that is freely shared. Whether that is through a personal chat, a Facebook post, or a literature/website recommendation. Thank you to all who give of your time and knowledge to help those of us who are starting this leg of our journey.

For 2019 I have my new list of resolutions, though some are probably better-termed goals:
1. Write daily.
I will write daily. This is a habit I want to build. I can stick to a deadline, like in a challenge. But I have a tendency to binge write instead of pacing myself. I’m not setting myself a word minimum, just focusing on the habit.
2. Read about my craft every month.
I will read about my craft every month. Whether a book, an article, or I might even include a video, I will devote time to learning everything I was never taught in school. I suppose that the English teachers who told me that I had the requisite skill to write a term paper and therefore shouldn’t attempt anything creative are to blame in part. A girl who liked math and science was a waste of their time. So it is up to me to seek knowledge.
3. Understand the tech.
I’ve taken the first steps at using the website, social media, and photo editing. I will focus some time on improving those skills. And, I just have to say that in a general way I really hate most of social media. While it allows people who would never meet to create a community that supports us as we stretch our wings, it also allows a lot of stupid to congregate and spread their contagion. So, while forcing myself to step out of my comfort zone, I hope to do so responsibly and with a great deal of patience.
4. Recharge and seek inspiration in the world around me.
I will take the time to step away from the computer and seek new experiences. I will take time to leave the digital world to relax in the physical. Sometimes, a little room to breath and reconnect with the world can open our mind to new possibilities.
5. Enjoy life.
I only get one shot at this life, so I need to take the time to enjoy it. I will spend time with family and friends, so I have no regrets. Go to the theater to see the big blockbuster in IMAX 3D with a group of friends. Camp out in medieval garb while watching stick jockeys bang each other senseless. Play a D&D campaign in a marathon session and see how many ways I can be killed. Just have fun.
6. Love myself.
I will take the time to take care of me. I am worth it, and I deserve to focus some of my time on my physical and mental health. Honestly, this entire list is about this. It’s about spending time on me this year. Last year, even with my personal writing goals, was spent in trying to keep everyone around me healthy. Family’s important, but so am I. So, 2019 is about enriching myself.

NaNo Complete

My first NaNo is complete and the rough draft is available on Rough Trade. I was pretty impressed with myself that I could write 75k in a month and turn out something that is readable.  It will need some work before it is ready to be published to my site. I can see several areas I need to tighten up, and I’m all over the place with my POV. But, I told the story I set out to tell.

Up next, I hope to be working with my alpha reader on my Quantum Bang project. (Shhh...can’t talk about it.)

I’m also plotting my sequel for the next Rough Trade. Right now that looks like it will be part 2 in my Shelter from the Rain series. Part 1 was Debutante Ball, a Sentinel Fusion with a modern Magnificent 7 setting. It’s currently available on my site.

NaNo Update

So, this is my first NaNo, and it has been a trip. I’m currently at 45,761 words so feeling pretty good about the pace overall. My project is estimated around 75k. It will be the longest story I’ve ever written. I can see a few issues I will need to correct in the final version. And, I will probably need to find a beta to review it. Also, a new experience.

I’ve never mixed more than 2 fandoms together so, hopefully it flows well. I picked the ones I did for good reason, so hopefully it doesn’t seem contrived. Wish me luck. I’m off to plot more mayhem and distruction.

Oh, Today I posted chapter 10.  Here is the link to the Project File and chapters:   http://www.roughtrade.org/project-file-transmutation-by-ellywinkle/

Happy NaNoWriMo

Day 1 of NaNo is here. I have a good start with Chapter 1. This might be split up in the final draft as I have the Tony and Jack scene from X-ray at the end.  It’s about a week and a half out from Tony’s initial infection, but the first step toward spreading the new virus. Not completely happy with that part, both because of the time skip and because of the general flow.  Well, that’s why it’s a Rough Draft.

Since I’m shooting for 75k it means I have a writing goal of approx 2.5k a day.  I’m hopeful that I can keep up the word count so I have a bit more flexibility in the end to still meet the goal.

Wish me luck.

November Rough Trade

Decision made, basic plot completed. My Rough Trade entry for November is a multi-fandom crossover between NCIS/Stargate (SG-1 & Atlantis). Very minor crossover with Criminal Minds/Nub3rs/Hawaii Five-0. The story starts with NCIS SWAK episode so for most of the minor series it is pre-series. I am really just borrowing a few characters.

The name is Transmutation and revolves around the idea of Tony DiNozzo exposed to a Pegasus disease from a marine on leave from Atlantis while he is in Bethesda with the plague. The disease mutates in him and is later spread as a flu. Most recover with very mild symptoms. But for those with any Ancient DNA, it starts overwriting the human part of the code.

The Stargate shows are AU because there’s just some things that don’t match up. I’m on schedule to be ready to write come Nov 1. Right now, I’m fine tuning the timing and mapping it out on my timeline to make sure all of the scenes are in the right order. My try at the artwork is below.

What’s up? Sept 2018

Been busy lately. I’m working on my wordpress site so hope to have a few stories posted there soon. My first draft of my Quantum Bang is finished and off to the alpha reader to see how far off the mark I may be. Never used an alpha reader before so looking forward to the experience. It’s my first time writing a story this long and first time in this fandom. But I’m not going to worry about it until after November.

Speaking of November I’ve been pulling my hair out. Rough Trade’s nano prompt is Not Quite Human. I literally could not make myself come up with an idea while I was writing QB. Now that it’s finished I have 3.

1. Tony DiNozzo is exposed to a Pegasus Virus while at Bethesda with the plague. The virus is mutated by the plague and ends up rewriting his DNA to turn him into an ancient. It also infects anyone else with any form of the ata gene. He, and others infected, start getting some of the abilities that the ancients had. When they figure it out can the SGC get ahead of it and keep the program secret? People are disappearing and NCIS is investigating.

2. In the US those with powers must be registered and rated. Certain abilities, such as technokinesis, telepathy, etc, that are considered a security risk are required to wear armbands or collars to identify them. Above a certain rating they are conscripted by the government for their own protection. Abby is a technopath who was conscripted as a child and raised to belief in service to the state and she wears her collar with pride. But Tim McGee is the only other gifted on the team. He’s a level 6 telepath. So while he is properly registered, he was a level below conscription service since level 6 and below require touch. He’s worn his gloves and body suit ever since he tested positive. Actually, he is level 9 and he has locked it off and kept it hidden as long as he can. When a terrorist named Ari Haswari tries to bomb a building in DC, Tim makes the only decision he can and uses his abilities to help everyone in the building escape. Now a hunt is on in DC because it is illegal for any Telepath level 7 and above to enter DC limits. Everyone is after him, and to his surprise it is Tony and Gibbs who try to help. Everyone thinks they are norms, but Tony is an empath and Gibbs a precog. They’ve been helping the gifted escape for years, and now it’s time to help one of their own.

3. Everyone knows about Sky High. The best and the brightest are invited to learn. But the Beacon is just as good, even though Principle Argent is kinda creepy and seems to have his own agenda. The Coach is weird in a good way, even if he is obsessed with beating the other school at Save the Citizen. And so what that Stiles got classified as Hero Support. It’s not like he’s crazy enough to want to put himself in front of the firing squad. After all, self preservation is one of his virtues, isn’t it? But when his best friend Scott suddenly powers up and leaves him behind, it’s time for him to decide if he is ready to let the world understand the power of the Spark.

Oh well, I will plot them all and see which one will inspire me the most.

Quantum Bang

In my continued effort to stretch myself, I have decided to participate in the new Quantum Bang. I’m still plotting the story but went ahead to write the intro. It’s just my push to avoid staring at a blank page. This is a Fix-It Challenge and amazingly I went entirely blank on fix-it ideas. Luckily an afternoon coffee hour with mom helped me brainstorm. I love her to death and rarely take any of her suggestions, but she will frequently say something that will lead me down a tangent to that spark of inspiration. So I’m taking this idea and running with it.

No, not sharing what it is. It’s a secret until the story is posted. I will keep you updated on my journey. It’s 50k+ words so this will be one of my longest if I can complete it. Wish me luck.

On a separate note, I’m also working on an rough outline for two more stories in my Debutante Ball storyline, will soon work on finalizing Minor Misunderstanding, and am sorting through ideas for the November Rough Trade. Whether the writing is good or bad, at least I’m enjoying myself.

Rough Trade

So, first for me. This July I participated in the Rough Trade Challenge. It was the Little Black Dress challenge to create two Sentinel fusion stories of 15,000-20,000 words each. This was a personal stretch for me because, first I’ve never written a fan fic over 6k. Second, I hate the thought of posting WIPs so the idea of it out there for people to read is a little disconcerting. Third, it’s a pretty public forum and let’s face it I haven’t posted anything that actual people would read in a long time. (I even have trouble posting thoughts here even though I know there is no interest in reading it.). I only created this site to make myself “share” random dribs and drabs of writing as a step to make myself post actual stories.

Outcomes: I’m extremely pleased with the result. I have completed two stories that are readable, enjoyable, and have a lot of potential in the editing phase so GO ME!

The down side: I REALLLLLY need to learn to pace myself. I felt like I was in a race to finish. I realize that part of it is that I tend to binge write when I set down to write. I can crank 10k in a day but then often won’t write again for a week. This is where I have a tendency to burn out before finishing long stories. It’s one of the reason I participated, to see my strengths and weaknesses. Also, I have trouble shutting my mind down. I ended up with a lot of insomnia. So more research.

Another thing was working on the art work. I had never done that, at all. So complete new experience for me. It was painful at first but by the end I could see where people might want to explore this. I downloaded a few programs so we’ll see where that ends up.

So, I guess what this all means is that I will be participating in more challenges. In the right environment is inspires me to grow and create. To the future!

One Moment...

The man waited at the bus stop for the 15 cross-town, which was running late by the way. Just one moment would have changed his entire day. There were a multitude from which to choose this specific day. There was the moment this morning when he rolled over and instead of just hitting snooze had somehow knocked his book over on top of it, thereby preventing the alarm from ringing once more. There was the moment the little girl in 5B ran into the hallway to wave goodbye to her mother and, seeing the jam laced hands he had zigged instead of zagged. This of course resulted in a return to his apartment to change clothes.

There was the moment he was late getting to the copier to pick up the email he had printed instead of deleting. The same email his boss had been holding awaiting his arrival. There was the moment that the elderly lady stepped in front of the sign at the deli and he did not see the sign signifying the change in ingredients to his menu selection. The change that resulted in an afternoon of indigestion.

And then there was that moment, the one at the end of the day where he stopped to let Carla on the elevator and was spotted by his boss and informed that he would be working overtime today. Which of course resulted in his current predicament. After finally finishing the report his boss had needed before tomorrow’s management meeting and taking the time to ensure it was properly bound and assembled, the man had ran to the bus stop and just missed the 23 which was a straight shot to home. Missed it by just a moment.

So here he sits, waiting for a bus that will take him on a long circular route before reaching his neighborhood. At which point, he might add, he will still have to walk almost two miles to get to his front door. And what is this? Is it about to rain. Just great. He reaches into his backpack and removes the umbrella every traveler of public transportation needs to carry and sighs.

“Excuse me.” The voice soft and tentative coming from his side. A woman dressed in blue approached him carefully. She was a vision of loveliness, the fading light struck her rich brown eyes making them appear to glow from within. There was a warmth there that stretched out to touch everything within reach and he found himself smiling a truly open smile.

“I’m sorry to bother you. I was delayed a moment this morning and forgot to grab my umbrella. Would you mind terribly sharing until the bus arrives?”

“Please, be my guest.”

“Thank you so much. I don’t think I’ve seen you out here before.”

“It’s a new schedule for me. I think you’ll be seeing a lot more of me.”

She smiled a little smile while blushing heavily, “I’m really glad to hear that.”
